How to discover space hogs on your hard drive ?
If you have a hard drive that is quickly approaching capacity, sorting through the files and folders for the ones taking up the most space can be a really time-consuming process.
One way to find out which files are hogging disk space when your hard drive fills up is to use a specialist utility that displays your disk space usage. There are a number of excellent free utilities that differ mainly in the way the disk space usage is portrayed.
1. SpaceSniffer
SpaceSniffer is a program developed to give you an idea about the structure of folders and files on your disks. By using a Treemap visualization layout, you have immediate perception of where big folders and files are situated on your devices.
Start a scan process and see the overall situation. The bigger are the elements on the view, the bigger are folders and files on your disk. you can get a more detailed view by just clicking on one of the big elements.
WinDirStat is a disk usage statistics viewer and cleanup tool for various versions of Microsoft Windows.
Note:- if you are looking for an alternative for Linux, you are looking for KDirStat (apt-get install kdirstat on Debian-derivatives) and for MacOS X it would be Disk Inventory X or GrandPerspective.
3. Foldersize
Folder Size 2.6 shows sizes of folders seen in Explorer windows

I recommend Directory Report
http://www.file-utilities.com
It is faster than WinDirStat and
It looks just like the MS-Explorer but always shows the folder size
No eye candy like WinDirStat
Great posts, especially this one !! thank you! 🙂
